From that NBC News link:
Such searches ***pre-date*** the new Trump administration, and Customs and Border Protection says it conducts them to detect “digital contraband, terrorism-related content, and information relevant to visitor admissibility.”
and
The updated British travel advisory reads “you may be liable to arrest or detention ***if you break the rules***.”
(The *** are my emphasis.)
The detentions noted in the article are nothing new. These also pre-dated the Trump administration.
In case the rest of the world hasn't realized it, the mainstream media in the U.S. and other countries gave the Biden and Obama administrations the blind eye to all of the unconstitutional crap they pulled. "Orange Man Bad" does the same thing, and the mainstream media loses their collective sh*t. American citizens grew tired of the wide open border that deluged our country with illegal aliens and drained our tax dollars. No other country in the world puts up with this. We have a long-standing immigration policy and we are still an immigrant nation, but we expect everyone who wants in to follow our rules, LIKE EVERY OTHER COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. While both Democrat and Republican administrations turned a blind eye to undocumented aliens, it was the Biden administration who opened the floodgates and handcuffed our border control agents from doing their jobs.
So, yeah, excuse us if our elected president, by popular and electoral votes, listens to his constituents to keep our country safe. There are no apologies to give.
Oh, and if you want to know the facts about which administrations deported the most people in recent years:

Bottom line: Understand and follow the rules just like you've always had to with any other country in the world, and you'll be fine.

With proper documentation (passport/visa) there is very little if any issue at the US border, particularly for an EU citizen. The crap the news media is putting out is remarkable only for its lack of facts and unreliability. Please come to the US for the conference. You won’t be disappointed.

A while ago I had plans to go to the common conference.
Plans were scrapped because I (as citizen of an EU country) simply do
not feel comfortable with visiting the US any longer.
Just too many cases of harassment at the border.
