Don't conflate proving that the backups are good with a disaster recovery test as part of business continuity. Proving that backups are good is a much more limited task. Disaster recovery testing requires restoring all data (and potentially the OS) to the last save point and then testing to ensure that full functionality is available. A financial institution I'm involved with is required to perform Disaster Recovery Testing annually per our Business Continuity Plan. I believe that's beyond the scope of the OP.
