Troy,
Getting back to the OP's situation. Focusing on Jerry's question. Ok?
Let's stick with that.
Jerry is saying that when he prompts INZTAP, on his 7.4 system, that
*ULTRIUM5 is not a valid option for the DENSITY parameter. At this time, the command doesn't know the device type, what kind of VTL you have, etc.
So, whether or not he is on a local or cloud system, has a local VTL or a cloud VTL, or even has a VTL or a physical library do not matter.
*ULTRIUM5 still isn't a valid option for the DENSITY parameter.
CPD0084: '*ULTRIUM5 ' not valid for parameter DENSITY.

Which is odd, since is *QIC120 really still an option at 7.4?

Where can one find the valid combinations?
Where can one see that *ULTRIUM5 is not supported? I know there's a place which used to show this, and this is why I changed my density some time ago but I'll be danged if I can find it anymore.

We are using BRMS. It was done when we went to the cloud.
We never changed the way that we were doing backups.
Did it 2 years ago.

Troy,
What kind of VTL you have has zero effect on what the options are on
F4 or ? to prompt for the DENSITY parameter. Try leaving the device
blank on INZTAP and hitting F4 on the DENSITY parameter.

That happened to our system.
We have our system in the cloud and the company that is hosting our
system moved the VTL to new VTL and didn't check the actual setting

our system.
They set it to *ultrium7.
They did a read not a INZTAP, you can read back 2 levels but can not
write
2 levels. They also did not notify us of the change.
I would check with whoever set up the VTL.

Ok, this makes NO sense.

Yesterday the system went down hard.
An outside company was going to do a fire alarm testing and threw
the wrong breaker and brought down the data center!!!
WTH?!?!?!

Networks, IBMi, phones, UPS. Everything.

We use a VTL for out nightly backups.
Part of the backup does a INZTAP and has *ULTRIUM5 in Density as
that is what we had and still have as needed for a physical tape.

The INZTAP failed last night saying it is an invalid density.
NOTHING has changed.

Why in the H....eck would this fail now?

When I do an INZTAP and put ? in the Density, *ULTRIUM5 is not listed.

We are at 7.4 and IPL the box every 4 weeks. Last IPL was 2 weeks
ago, except for yesterday's debacle.

Does it matter? I don't see any reason to given any density parameter for reasonably recent cartridge drives. Those figure everything out themselves. Once the cartridge is full, the tape drive sends an appropriate answer back. Should be no different with VTL. Size-per-tape configuration is done with the VTL, not the OS.

See my direct answer to Jerry?

Patrik,
On topic: You're right. He should use the *DEVTYPE or the *CTGTYPE. This gives him less places to update when he replaces cartridges and/or devices.
Chasing squirrels: I would like to know when supported formats change since I tend to stay on the most recent release. I'd like to know in advance if I need to start using a higher level on my VTL.
