Jerry,
*ULTRIUM5 is simply not supported as an option at current releases of IBM
i. The Knowledge Center is way behind on this and I dinged IBM to update
that for current options.
Now, *CTGTYPE or *DEVTYPE may work around that. I wonder if you "think"
you were previously specifying *ULTRIUM5 and are just stressed out over
your outage.

I am using a DD6900 VTL. I have multiple options for tape emulation and I
tend to pick densities on the higher spectrum of the current release. This
way I won't have to convert when upgrading to a newer release.

That being said, let me add these:
- I am using BRMS.
- I never use *PERM. Instead I use expiration dates controlled by 2 BRMS
control groups. Quarterly saves are retained for just over a year and
daily saves are retained for just a few weeks.
- I never use INZTAP on an existing tape. When all tape files on that
volume expire, BRMS knows to write over.
- We got rid of our physical tape library years ago and I've not touched a
physical tape here in a LONG time.
- I have done bare metal restores to new systems from our VTL, using the
BRMS recovery reports.

Ok, this makes NO sense.

Yesterday the system went down hard.
An outside company was going to do a fire alarm testing and threw the
wrong breaker and brought down the data center!!!
WTH?!?!?!

Networks, IBMi, phones, UPS. Everything.

We use a VTL for out nightly backups.
Part of the backup does a INZTAP and has *ULTRIUM5 in Density as that is
what we had and still have as needed for a physical tape.

The INZTAP failed last night saying it is an invalid density. NOTHING has
changed.

Why in the H....eck would this fail now?

When I do an INZTAP and put ? in the Density, *ULTRIUM5 is not listed.

We are at 7.4 and IPL the box every 4 weeks. Last IPL was 2 weeks ago,
except for yesterday's debacle.
