No matter what kind of OUTER JOIN, LEFT RIGHT or DULL, if you say SELECT * you'll get the doubling up of the same columns.

That's why I'd suggested using a CASE statement in the column list - with WHENs based on something like WHEN header IS NULL use detail WHEN detail is NULL use header else use header -
Does that seem like a possibility? Then you could use that SELECT as a CTE.
