So how does an internal user access the http server using external DNS ?

Me, I would not do as Don suggested. That just plays heck with the various
failover settings you may have. For example if my.com goes to
208.xxx.xxx.xxx from the outside where it hits an intelligent splitter
which can route it to a number of internal servers based on their current
status and then you route in internally directly to one by using a host
table you've then blown that external splitter out of the water.
