Patrik:

Now I recognize the signature, VI for Write/Quit/force write. Never
thought of that before. Clever.

It was Frank Soltis PhD thesis that conceived of the single level storage
and the virtualization layer allowing hardware to be changed without
affecting software above that layer. Now several systems do that but Frank
was the first one. He also went with object oriented architecture in the
OS and that architecture was years ahead of everyone else.

The actual engineering to build the system and program CPF (the
original name of the OS on S/38) was a good size team. Bains being one of
them.

The book "Fortress Rochester", while dated (2001), will give you a lot
of insight into the architecture.
Written by Dr. Frank Soltis who is the father of the S/38, AS/400, etc.

Thank you. In fact I have it acquired many years ago. And read. And
probably forgot a lot of details. :-)

I also have "Inside the AS/400". Same for that.

I hear at least one voice "complaining" that Frank Soltis is not the sole
one making S/38 (and the AS/400) possible, but Dick Bains also played a big
role.
