Hello,
picking up an older thread again for others to benefit.

I did not test if IBM i can cope with sparse files, but I don’t see any reason why it shouldn’t.
Today I finally managed to get image catalogs for save/restore to eventually work on a 7.3 machine.
And today I finally took my time to adapt my existing "save differential" CLP to the new environment with NFS based image catalogs.
The hardest thing to solve were spurious errors like OPT1330 when running INZOPT, and errors on vary off of the virtual optical device, because it appeared to be in use. I solved this issue by inserting DLYJOB(15) after vary on of the device, after INZOPT, and before vary off. Maybe a shorter amount of time would have been sufficient. But then, it runs in batch at night anyway.
So, a Cron job ob the Linux based backup server creates sparse files (named by date) as shown in the former post, and adds an according entry to the VOLUME_LIST to appear in line 1. The CLP on IBM i later picks up from there and runs the according savchgobj, savdlo, and sav commands.
Next challenge: Completely automate a Save 21 on Sundays…
