That seems to be the answer Paul. For some reason the pre-compiler will not accept large variables - you have to use sqltype().

I wish they'd either update the docs or the pre-compiler!

This may not apply to BLOB, but for clob I use these definitions in my RPGLE:

dcl-s requestText sqltype(clob: 1048576) CCSID(1208);
dcl-s responseText sqltype(clob: 1048576) CCSID(1208);

Subject: Limits for SQL functions

Can anyone tell me where i can find documentation on the limits for the SQL functions such as GET_BLOB_FROM_FILE.

I am getting a "not usable" error when trying to use a host variable > 32K - but the only docs I can find relate just to BLOB and they sure don't have such a low limit.

Is there some special magic required for large objects?
