In some apps like Whatsapp, and also on MS Teams, enclosing a word tightly
between two asterisks is like turning the word as "bold". I thought that
may be the reason, the person may have written it with some such kind of
editor to emphasize the word.

I'm pretty sure the person who replied did NOT add the asterisks.
