That's what I said before. It's expensive. Recall the days when the
%TIMESATMP BIF returned the microseconds portion with all zeros?
Well, a colleague of mine "implemented" his solution like this:

exec sql set :myTimestmp = current_timestamp;

Very simple huh? When I showed him the code that was generated, he opened
big eyes and said: "This is crazy!".

I taught him to rather use the QWCCVTDTAPI, and this one is real quick.
It's always a non-bound call to a system program, but this one runs real
faster that a call to SQLROUTE, I believe. :-)

Let's just hope that if RPG implement it they don't use the SQL function!
<grin>

I think a lot of people forget that there is an overhead when calling out
to SQL functions - a quick glance at the generated code shows that there is
often a lot going on.

I changed it to:
gResult = 'A' + %Left( blanks : 10 ) + 'B';
and
EXEC SQL set :gResult = 'A' || space(10) || 'B';

Now gives:
55
7427

46
8771

Just for fun ...

dcl-s blanks char(40) Inz;
dcl-s x char(30);

x = 'A' + %Left( blanks : 10 ) + 'B';
