This thumb thing seems to me something the Twitter Generation is used to, but not necessarily those who have grown up with looking at upper case BASIC code on TV screens.
I think this is an interesting thing to think about: A gender gap not only showing up in mindset differences between the "stupid youth" and the "grumpy oldtimers", but also finding a way to creep into UI design.
