Duh!
I only *thought* I'd successfully recompiled the module with the pBUFFY and pMUFFY reinitialization; it had failed because of a library list issue.
The reinitialization of pBUFFY and pMUFFY appears to have solved the problem.
Maybe it really is time for me to (as George Washington put it) retire to the back-country, and live in a wigwam.
