My exprience with scanning guns is that even though the user can only 
see a small part of the screen (typically around 16 columns) the rest of 
the screen is still there.  Sometimes the scanner can scroll right/left 
to see the rest of it.

So you could just define a 20 character field and have only 6 characters 
visible (Without scrolling) on the scanner screen. I did this quite 
often back-in-the-day.
