Hello Jim,

Just removing the drive from the ASP does not also remove it from the RAID set, so if the drive failed, yes the system is in jeopardy. You’ll loose the system if another drive fails.

Yuck! Thanks for clarification! It's been a while since I touched that particular area.

I found a "Work with Device Parity Protection" screen in SST where I see the ASP-removed disk displayed with asterisks, and still being part of the RAID set.

Apparently V7R2 supports removing a disk from an ASP in SST while the system is up and running, but not from a RAID set. Need to check in DST.

Replacing the drive is reasonably easy and the RAID will rebuild putting you back on solid ground. Then you can re-add the space back, or create an iASP or secondary ASP.

This machine is about to be decommissioned "soon", and we don't want to to invest into a replacement disk at this point in time. Also, the machine is located in a DC. Going there often is plan B compared to "fix problem remotely" being plan A. :-)

Differential backups to ISO images are done automatically on a daily base, and Save 21 is run on a monthly base to tape. If things go bonkers, we'll just lose time and gain stress level. ;-)

:wq! PoC
