Unless you know you're running poorly written software for AIX where
this might matter, I would say always set this variable.
(99.999% of people are running all cross-platform software for Linux, et
al in PASE... almost nobody is running AIX-specific software. And even
if you did, and it caused problems with >8 character userids, it'd mean
that the software isn't very well written that it doesn't do basic
bounds checking. Almost nobody needs this 8 character limitation, but
this isn't set by default!! Drives me nuts.)
