SFTP is a part of secure shell. Although the commands used in it are similar to those in FTP, it uses very different technology behind it to run. Another option is to use SCP which is also a part of SSH. But I've found advantages to SFTP for scripting.

So yes, all you need is *SSHD is started.

No. SFTP is just a special protocol case of ssh. The SFTP server is
integrated in the ssh server.
