The OpenSSH client that IBM provides for IBM i *does* indeed support password authentication.

It will not allow you to type the password interactively on a 5250 terminal.  But if you use a proper Unix terminal, it will work fine.   Alternately, if you use a tool like Expect to script the password, it will work fine.

I am quite sure that sftp client on IBM i does support *ONLY* key authentication, and does *NOT* support password authentication.

I was used to use ssh in order to get the host key into known_hosts file, then to validate private/public keys setup, before being able to use sftp as a client on an IB M i.
