This is happening on V7R2 and V7R4 systems using freeform RPGLE.

Your test is what I expected, but I'm seeing *EXCLRD lock on the dtaara.

I'm doing some testing with Unlock now.

Then after calling it, I ran DSPJOB option 12.  No locks on that data area.

Only when I add *LOCK to the IN opcode do I see the *EXCLRD lock.

This was run on IBM i 7.3 ...


Well, one could always use the API QWCRDTAA  to have total control of the process, rather than relying on some RPG runtime routine behaviors.

I think you should post this question to the RPG400-L list.

Also, you did not show the "code" that uses this declaration ... e.g. there should be an "IN" opcode somewhere?   Did you specify *LOCK on that opcode?  :-o   If you want *EXCLRD or *EXCL, you need to specify *LOCK on the IN opcode.

If your program then does an OUT opcode to update the data area, you can specify *LOCK on that to retain the lock ...

There is also an UNLOCK opcode ...
