thanks everyone. all good ideas.

However, I need to keep the QRYDFN as is because the users know how to work
with it. I would try to teach them how to use QMQRY but its too complex and
full of bugs.
I have gotten the STRQMQRY to run and it asks me to enter the parameters so
this part is great.
The only problem I now have is that the STRQMQRY fails producing a CPD431D.
The message is "Reduction of total digits not allowed for operator x'07' ".
What does this mean????
Darryl.
