There were a few select upgrades where retention of the serial number was possible.
And there were a few crafty people who knew how to change the serial number in such a situation (all I know are dead).
But I don't believe either are available or possible anymore. (so it wasn't a bad flashback you were going through).
I find it best to contact the vendor and work out a deal. Often it's pennies on the dollar for a backup or "CBU" machine. If, however, your customer went cheap and dropped the maintenance, and knowing your primary market and the vendor of choice for that market, you're not likely to get much support (if you dropped the maintenance). We have that same vendor, have kept up our maintenance, and have a nice CBU deal and do quarterly switches to test.
