You can use LFTP OSS package .

LFTP allows to use User/Password authentication.

It looks like what you're doing ... if I've got it correctly ... is logging
in and then hanging up, and then trying to retrieve files.

It's all got to be part of one operation. The separate password script is
invoked automatically because you set that environment variable. The rest
of the operations must be in one script.
