Here's something that's part of my QSHONI utility:
http://www.github.com/richardschoen/qshoni

The QSHQRYTMP command pretty much wraps using RUNSQL to an outfile. Great for doing quick queries to a temp file. It's a light wrapper over RUNSQL.

Results can be consumed directly from a CL program with RCVF.

You will probably want to have a template DDL or DDS created if you plan to make sure you don't get level checks on the outfile format.

Ex: QSHONI/QSHQRYTMP SQL('select COUNT(*) as COUNT from qsys2.ASP_INFO') OUTFILE(QTEMP/SQLTMP0001)

When it's done you can read the single field count record from QTEMP/SQLTMP0001 with RCVF.

Have fun.

How can I run an SQL statement and retrieve the results into a CL pgm?

For example, I want to SELECT COUNT(*) FROM QSYS2.ASP_INFO: but I want to
run it using RUNSQL in a CL program and get the COUNT into a variable in
the CL program.

Something like this:
DCL &COUNT *DEC LEN(1)
RUNSQL SQL( SELECT COUNT(*) FROM QSYS2.ASP_INFO)
