If I remember fine, when using VIPA (Virtual IP Address) and proxy arp failover, all physical and virtual IP addresses must be in the same subnet, from the network point of view (on the server, the virtual one must be configured with a 255.255.255.255 mask). If you mean VLAN with logical LAN segment, usually subnets do not use several VLANs (I do not even know if it is possible for a subnet to spread over several VLANs).
