if you do not have to buy a system, look at pub400. It is a system out of
Europe especially for guys like you. There is no charge that I know of and
you get the latest and greatest features to learn with. You just cannot use
it for production purposes.

Building that system will be a challenge for you. There is a lot to do. If
you have the time then go for it. You may find that licensing will be an
issue.

Good luck.

I am looking at purchasing a model i5 520 unit, with an expansion bay.
The asking price for this unit is $100, plus another $100 for shipping.
Unfortunately, this unit has had its disks removed from it, meaning that I
will have to track down and install the software myself.

Not just software, but compatible disk drives, and the appropriate
mounting hardware.

It's not as antiquated as I'd initially thought (I was thinking a
honking big tower on casters, with a "hat" and a "sidecar," probably so
superannuated as to be on the verge of failure, but that's a 510, if I
remember right), but if you're looking at a rack-mount box, about the
size of an old Sony U-Matic VCR, then I'm guessing it's probably the
same vintage as our E4A: our newest box, but still pretty old.

Without drives, much less an OS, it's probably just a very big
paperweight, and as a self-described "noob," you probably don't have the
resources to restore it to working order. I'd look elsewhere, if I were
you.
