Here I am Jack and Patrick

You're right ... I realize I'm trying to reinvent the wheel ... but
directly calling via SSH a Linux (C) application that spawns Cobol programs
made it easy for me to make the application stateful until the SSH channel
was closed.
The alternative could have been via TCP sockets (as Patrick proposes, here
in the discussion) ... but SSH seemed safer to me ...

I think I'll end up using MQ services!

Thanks
Roberto

Sounds like you're trying to re-invent the message queue / message bus /
enterprise bus.

IBM MQ, Rabbit MQ, Kafka ... there's about 40 or so different
implementations of this sort of thing.

You'll likely spend more time trying to make your tar paper and baling wire
solution work than you'll spend implementing a proven solution.
