logger -p auth.warning "test message from STRQSH"
/QOpenSys/usr/bin/logger -p auth.warning "test test"
/QOpenSys/usr/bin/logger -z
that did work.
my .conf file is:
*.debug /tmp/syslog.out rotate time 1d archive /tmp/syslogfiles
so is this saying that If I pass _NO_ level, that is lower than "debug"?

The default facility and level of the logger command is "user" and
"notice".
user:notice
Try specifying the facility and level with the logger command (note the
decimal point separator)
QSH CMD('/QOpenSys/usr/bin/logger -p auth.warning test')
