We have Canon multifunction devices here also configured as system printers. We have this issue when the ink is below x% that the writer issues a message CPI404F and will no longer function as a system printer but it will print from PC applications just fine. The workaround is to print to a writer which will automatically send the spool file as a pdf to the user and they can print it as a pc application.

Is there some modification we can make to the printer, or it's driver or something to not give a rip about the low ink? It actually starts at about 40%

It's a Canon Imagerunner Advance C5540i
