If you get prompted with
mdelete test.txt?
cancel it with a N and turn prompting off like
ftp> prompt
Interactive mode Off .
ftp> mdelete *
200 Representation type is ASCII nonprint.
250 Deleted file /home/rob/scuzz/test.txt

I am trying to clear the folder on the target system.

delete /QTHU/*.*

I get the message: No such file or directory.

I have tried various combinations but none do the clearing.

How do I clear a remote folder using FTP?
