After a little more testing it appears that if there is a "Heading Line 1" defined for a column that heading gets returned instead of the actual field name in all cases.

Does the field you mention have a heading line 1 label on it ?

Yeah, that works
select C000000001 from t00000001;
displays the heading as C000000001 instead of the long name. At least in Run SQL Scripts.
