Yep, go with what works! Since device descriptions generally work better than remote output queues if you can find the correct driver, I haven't found the need to use a remote output queue in likely a decade. Others have mentioned the TSPLPRD LPR driver which does bring remote output queues closer in parity to device description but even that isn't as clean or reliable.

No particular reason for the remote output queue over the device, not that I remember anyway.
Since I can't seem to see a benefit of the remote output queue over the device description ... go with what works.

Any reason you are using a remote output queue rather than a network

This config works perfectly for one of my customers for that exact
printer:

CRTDEVPRT DEVD(<Printer>) DEVCLS(*LAN) TYPE(3812) MODEL(1)
          LANATTACH(*IP) PORT(9100) ATTACH(*DIRECT) ONLINE(*YES)
          FONT(11 *NONE) FORMFEED(*AUTOCUT)
          ACTTMR(170) INACTTMR(*SEC15)
          TRANSFORM(*YES) MFRTYPMDL(*HP5SI) PPRSRC1(*LETTER)
          RMTLOCNAME('printer.ip.address.here')
          USRDFNOPT(*IBMSHRCNN) SYSDRVPGM(*IBMSNMPDRV)
