I honestly don't know if inserting a #2746 and a #2844 would suffice. Given the low prices for used equipment in eBay and other services, I'd take the risk and just try. The worst thing that can happen is that it wouldn't work.
The other possibility would be to acquire a BOScom controller. A friend of mine is using this box to drive a 3477 terminal in his home, while the BOScom itself connects with tn5250 via Site2Site-VPN to the IBM i machine in the DC.
I can ask him for the precise product name, if you're interested. Probably you will also get them in used condition only.
