I'm not aware of a way to tell whether a USB is physically present from
within the vHMC itself, but I would go to the hypervisor and view the
devices/Virtual Hardware that was assigned to the VM, as well as the Boot
Options/Order that were defined. That way I could at least tell if the USB
passthrough device was being allocated as well as what Boot Order was being
followed.

Strange thought.
Is there a remote way to determine if the USB stick is in the HMC and it's
trying to boot from that?
Let's pretend that I was just getting started and hadn't hosed this up. Is
there a way to see if the USB stick is in before starting the upgrade?
