(I'm usually not a contributor to this list as my iseries days are long
gone, nonetheless I'm still interested in developments around that tech and
read a bit from time to time.)

Anyway, I have to disagree here and this is a quite important and heartfelt
issue for me, therefore I post this reply. I think that it's HTTPS that
allows the concept of the "free and open exchange of information" in the
first place! All HTTP traffic can easily be eavesdropped on, manipulated,
or diverted to/through a third party, while HTTPS makes this lots harder.
Sure, HTTPS is not really secure either, but it's much, much better than
plain HTTP.
And since the advent of free and anonymous SSL certificates in the form of
LetsEncrypt (as already noted by other posters in this thread), there is no
real reason not to use HTTPs anymore.
By the way and speaking of "free and open", LetsEncrypt is, among others,
sponsored by the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Best regards, RS

Personally, I regard the dropping of support for HTTP as a big win for
e-commerce sites, for those who monetize information, and for those who
profit from upgrade treadmills.

And a big loss for the original concept of the Internet as a vehicle for
the *free and open* exchange of information.
