Files and Directories starting with a dot in their name are considered hidden by usual UNIX command shells, and derived applications. GUI Applications usually have a setting to enable listing dot files. ls -a (list all) shows these files (and the links . and .. in directories).
It is *not* a file flag or something. It's the name which triggers them being "invisble".
