Very clever!

I once worked for an organization that ran a home grown CICS (IBM mainframe) replacement.

The signon password was encrpyted with itself as a seed and the encrypted value was saved.

We were coding in 360 Assembly and I never looked at the code, nor do I know how secure the approach was, but no passwords were ever saved. Code was developed circa 1970.
