Hey, do you also do a DSPFFD to an output file of all files on your system every night to generate your own cross reference?
This way you don't have to use SYSCOLUMNS or the raw data in QADBIFLD.
The beauty of generating your own cross reference include:
- Ties up a bunch of disk space. Buying disk may get you some swag from your vendor.
- Increases I/O on your system. This may help you justify moving to a newer system.
- Ties up batch capacity when generating. This too may help you justify moving to a newer system.
- It's a proprietary technique. Which by confusing your cross reference may help with job security. After all, any SQL Server developer out there knows to look at things like SYSCOLUMNS.
- Since QADBIFLD has only been around since V3R1 you can still support that V2R1 machine out there. Then again those still measure disk in megabytes and probably don't have the space.
- You could then waste time by having to look not only at your cross reference but you then would also have to research all the changes which occurred since the last regen. Gives you more ammo to complain about how all change is evil.
- The file layouts will probably change with every OS upgrade as new columns are added and old ones are changed. Gives you more ammo to justify putting off those OS upgrades for all eternity.
