It takes a little coding but I find that using the QUSRJOBI API will give me the current status of a subsystem without any tricks that could interfere with other things running. Maybe that's already been mentioned, but it is worth looking into.

As it happens, I already suggested that the customer in question MONMSG for CPF1010 when starting the subsystem in question. It seems that last night, an unattended scheduled batch job that cycles that subsystem tried to STRSBS it before the ENDSBS had taken it down (I've seen that particular subsystem get "stuck" before, and take an unusually long time to shut down).
