I have a CL program that updates a data area (using CHGDTAARA). It runs in a batch job that runs under user QPGMR. The data area is has public change authority. Last night, I found the batch job in a *MSGW state, stuck on the CHGDTAARA, claiming that it didn't have authority to the data area. I gave it an R, and it worked just fine.

Can anybody explain what happened, and why?
