They really should just say: "Hey, we understand what you are asking for. It's a completely reasonable-sounding request.
But unfortunately, [the underlying architecture/design decisions made early on/interactions with other parts of the
system that we really can't change/our shortage of resources/etc.] make it impractical for us to work on at this time."

Yeah, I would have been quite happy with that. I have no idea of their constraints. For all of the IBM talk of open source tools/*NIX functionality being made available, programmers may not be free to use all of it internally. Even tell me to go to SAMBA instead and that it doesn't use native green screen commands would have been fine. To tell me that they need certain green screen commands opened back up seems to me to be saying "sorry, we can't really leverage all the things we put in our promotional news". After all, if I were connecting to Windows or any other SAMBA share, those who support it wouldn't tell me that I need to give the users access to specific Windows programs that create and remove directories. I'd be in a file system and only have to worry about where I'm reading from and where I'm copying to. The O/S takes care of the rest.

To my mind, that's the way it should be.

Opinions may vary.
