You are filtering your from ports? 53 is the to port. The from port will be any random port greater than 1023.

Hi All,

Trying to determine which ports I need to allow through the IBM i packet filter mechanism to be able to do name server lookups for PING and NSLOOKUP.

Port 53 TCP/UDP is the usual suspect, but more than that seems to be needed if using the built-in IBMi packet filtering.

I also turned on ICMP and that didn't help.

Q: Is there an IBMi port I am missing for simple name server resolution ?

I can get it to work by allowing all traffic just to my external DNS server site address, but this seems like it should not be necessary.

Thoughts appreciated.
