From a command line: kill -9 4560
Well I have shut down ACS and also RDi (just in case - since it houses a
version of ACS) and I'm still seeing this:
jonparis@JonsMacBook ~ % ps xa|grep java
4560 ?? S 1:43.89
/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk1.8.0_101.jdk/Contents/Home/jre/bin/java

-Dvisualvm.display.name=ACS Daemon -Dcom.ibm.tools.attach.displayName=ACS
Daemon com.ibm.iaccess.base.LmHybridServerImpl
65615 s000 S+ 0:00.00 grep java
I've looked in the Activity monitor and can't see anything that matches -
which makes it really hard to kill!
Any ideas?

the install will work properly? I've not had to do that in the past.

Actually I see two processes David.
Are you saying that I need to manually kill any such processes before
processes that look like they are part of ACS.
I would suggest exiting out of ACS entirely and killing any java
