Also, DISTINCT does not need a GROUP BY or ORDER BY - by itself it gives you unique instances of the column list - period! If you want counts for each group or sum or average or other aggregate function, then you should use a GROUP BY and not use DISTINCT - no need.

Yes, if you use GROUP BY, you can get the same results when you do not have any aggregate functions in the column list. And don't specify DISTINCT.
