429 programs that need to be changed in a slightly modified, 25+ yr old vendor package; fixed format, no service programs, no SQL.  But it still gets the job done and runs on the latest hardware. Amazing.

A small simple routine one would expect can just be copied and pasted into each program becomes another maintenance chore when that routine needs to be updated. If, however, that routine was part of a service program and was used that way by every program it would have been one update.
