Okay so you can use Virtual Partition Manager to define the partition. Navigator may have the hooks in there, but I tend to use STRSST to do VPM work.

VPM can be a little...funky. But it does work. If I recall you put the ISO on the IFS and mount it via a virtual optical drive. Then you can build the partition from the ISO, create the virtual disk drives on IBM i...haven't done it that way in a few years but it's definitely doable. If you need a hand reach out.

Steve,

Thanks for the reply. We do not have an HMC. So my options are limited to Navigator for i.

Do you have a HMC, Michael? It's a different procedure for managed and
non-managed systems.

Either way, you can host the partition with virtual disk from your
single IBM i partition.

For a Linux partition if you can spare maybe 4 GB RAM it's ideal.

Subject: Hosting Linux partitions on IBM i

Hi all,

We're looking to utilize more potential of our POWER9 server which
currently runs only a single IBM I partition. We want to add two Linux
partitions-development and production. These would host a couple
simple web apps for internal use by maybe 15 people at the most.
Navigator for i has two options: "Guest Partition Administration" and
"Configuration and Service-Create Partition." Does anyone have any
advice on what the best way to achieve our goal would be?

I've seen a couple articles which cover the process in broad strokes.
It looks like the "Create Partition" option has been enhance to guide
the process along. But I'm thinking I have to release some of the
memory from our IBM I partition before I can allocate any to the Linux partitions.

Also, I'm not sure how much memory would be required to run a simple
Linux partition. (As indicated above, our goal is not a high-capacity server.
Just something for primarily our small IT department.)

Any advice or a pointer to a detailed explanation of the requirements
would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Michael Quigley
