I need a immediate response to read the log file. On many of the FTP
scripts before my time, the logs were not saved, so I would like to break
in and scan the log file.

It seems this is not do-able?

I know you can use the following to redirect QSH output to a log file:
ADDENVVAR ENVVAR(QIBM_QSH_CMD_OUTPUT) +
VALUE('FILEAPPEND=/home/XXXXUSR/.logs/sftpl+
og.txt') REPLACE(*YES)

Followed by a QSH call of sftp works. Don't know if there is similar functionality for FTP. We also keep the 'log' for use to look at, we don't parse through it for errors. We just use the error messages from QSH and send a message if anything pops up. So sorry, I don't have a real answer for you, but thought this might provide some pointers. It does seem to dump the messages in real time.
