Couldn't agree with Rob B more. Use BRMS to do the restore as he described. It works very well and takes a lot of the guess work, if any, out.

I do not know the answer to your first question.

The tapes are on a rotation. The tape that is in the drive right now will be used tonight so it is expired so it can be used tonight.
I could test first thing in the morning before it gets replaced. If I need active tape. Otherwise I will need to make some phone calls, to get it swapped out.
The library that I am restoring is currently in the save process. I did a dsptap and found it.

Let's not approach that last question.
The end goal was to have data encrypted on the tapes.

Are you using BRMS to encrypt before you send the file to the tape, or
is the tape library doing the encryption?

Even if the tape is expired, If the data is still in the BRMS database
you should be able to recover it. (although I suggest you set that
tape to *PERM until you're done with it. If BRMS decides to use it
between now and then, it could be bad.....)

How/who set up BRMS encryption?

Subject: Another BRMS question

You guys may have saved me in the case of a real emergency.

I have been reading the other BRMS conversation half heartedly. I
look at some of our BRMS logs every day. They look good based on my
uneducated knowledge.
This conversation got me to change some of the sorts etc. I found
some messages that tell me that our S/36E data library (QS36F) is not
being encrypted, documentation clearly states that 'Q' libraries are
not encrypted. That was the main reason to use BRMS.

I asked the guy that set up BRMS about it. To quote him 'YIKES'.
Then I asked him if he had ever restored anything using BRMS. He said
'Nope, you have, just put brm on the end of the command'. I said
Nope, I have been restoring from save files. When he set it up he
just typed the commands he was told by...

That is enough background. Working on getting both issues fixed.

I have been trying to do a restore of a library. Using the RSTLIBBRM.
No success. I get two messages of interest in the logs.
CPA4264 Found THU; expected WED on device TC. (C I R),
I took an I. for this test it was okay in my mind.
Note THU should be expired.
CPF3715 File not selected. Data encrypted or not valid.
Recovery . . . : Do one of the following and try the request again:
-- Mount the correct volume.
-- Specify a different file.
-- Provide the correct decryption key.

Questions:
Is it because it is expired or do I need to supply some sort of key?

subject: RE: Another BRMS question

First of all if you are using tape names like THU then I don't think you're using BRMS right.

The default for RSTLIBBRM is SAVLVL(*CURRENT). So, unlike the regular RSTLIB, which defaults to VOL(*MOUNTED), it looks for the tape volume id last used to save that library. I'm assuming that would be on your WED tape. This is why you got:
CPA4264 Found THU; expected WED on device TC. (C I R),

Look at this a whole different way.
WRKMEDBRM SYSNAME(*LCL)
Look for the date of the save you want to restore from (ignore the "Volume Serial").
13=Display contents
Use 7=Restore on the library you want to restore. Or use "9=Work with saved objects" and just restore an object or two by using 7=Restore object
