Jack,

We make this exact same recommendation to customers using our SafeNet/i 
exit point solution when they do an OS upgrade.  We recommend that the 
system be brought to restricted state.  Then remove the exit point 
registrations and proceed with the OS upgrade. When the upgrade is done 
and before the system is put back in service, with the system still in 
restricted state, we have the customer re-register the exit points.  
Using this approach, the system is not at risk since it is in restricted 
state for the duration of the time when the points are not registered.
