Short answer is: there is no short answer.

physical and virtual disks may behave different. There is some
limits on I/O and Bandwith which can be used per vDisk,
per vController, per FC-Adapter etc.

So in the end: it depends. But even on a SAN it is a better
idea to have 10 than one disk, and have the data spread at least once.
