Yes and no. IBM could easily implement yet another password scheme and accompanying password hashes to be saved in user profiles. But therefore, Samba has to be enhanced also and *this* is harder (aka: more code to be developed). Since Samba ist not a true IBM I port but (as mostly always) a Port to PASE (a fake AIX runtime environment), I guess that getting password authentication work across PASE vs. the "true" i environment needs a lot of code in Samba to be (re)written, which maybe will not be accepted by the Samba team for being overly platform specific.
